Gavel2Gavel Search Tips:

To find information about a topic, simply type in a few keywords. The more detailed your query, the more relevant your search results will be.

The Gavel2Gavel Search engine also comes with some advanced capabilities to help you find exactly what you're looking for. Some of these capabilities are best described below.

Search Translation: requires "ABA," requires "association"
    Special Character: +
Finds: "ABA association," "ABA Association," and the plural "ABA associations"
Note: Does not find the lowercase "aba association," nor the abbreviated "ABA assoc"

Search Translation: excludes "ABA," requires "associations"
    Special Characters: - and +
Finds "Bar association," "Legal associations," and the lowercase "aba associations"
Note: Does not find "ABA associations"

Search Translation: prefers "ABA," requires "associations"
    Special Character: "or" and "and"
Finds: "Bar associations," "ABA associations," and "ABA Association"
Note: Documents with both selected terms appear higher in the search.

Search Translation: requires the phrase "ABA associations"
    Special Character: " "
    Finds: "ABA associations" only
Note: Does not find "ABA association" nor types of "associations"

Search Translation: requires "legal", requires words starting with "brief"
    Special Character: *
Finds: "Legal Briefs," "legal briefing," "legal brief"
Note: The asterisk is a wildcard representing any four or fewer characters.

Search Translation: excludes "justice," requires "Rehnquist" (case sensitive), requires "pictures," prefers "images"
Special Characters: "not", "and", and "or"
Finds: First finds "pictures and images of Reinquist," then "Rehnquist pictures"
Note: Does not find lowercase "rehnquist picture," nor the excluded "picture of justice Rehnquist"

Search Translation: ignores common words like "where," "is," and "the" and requires words containing "court"
    Special Character: *
    Finds: "court", "courts", and "courtroom"
Note: To suppress the ignore feature, use quotes, e.g. "Where is the court*?"

Note on Case Sensitivity: Only words or phrases containing an upper case character will be treated as case sensitive. A search for "usa" will match "Usa", "USA", and "usA"; while the term "USA" matches only its uppercase parent.

Using the Asterisk: The asterisk is also a powerful search tool, but it does have some limitations. It can not span words, i.e., the query "powerfu*earch" would not match the first sentence of this paragraph, and it can represent at most four letters or numbers. To avoid overly broad searches, the asterisk can only be used in words or phrases which have at least three alpha-numeric characters. Thus, a search for "th*" would be ignored.
